BLUSH NOIR
I designed a two-layer mini dress inspired by ladybugs. I wanted this fashion piece to be a tribute to my sister, because ladybugs have been her favorite insect since she was little. I made the inside dress black, and the outside dress pink, incorporating both black and red buttons and zippers into the design. This project allowed me to explore new techniques, such as sewing organic cutouts for the first time. The dress is designed to show a "reveal"; unbuttoning and unzipping the simpler outside to present a unique dress with interesting cutouts underneath. I also wanted to make this piece sustainable by upcycling old bedsheets donated by hotels to my school and by using only natural dyes such as hibiscus tea and India ink.
eco harmony
For this project, I designed an upcycled piece, focusing on using only plastic materials and a few old shirts. The lining, ruffles, and straps of this dress are made out of plastic table covers, while the outer part of the dress is made from old shirts my mother no longer wanted. I collected various plastic water bottles, cut them up into circles, and layered them on top of each other to create a fun design inspired by the ocean.
Beach bag
For this project, I wanted to make a roomy bag with multiple pockets that I would be able to take with me anywhere. I used a canvas fabric for the outside so it would be sturdy and hold its shape well, and a thinner linen fabric on the inside as a fun print. I added three pockets: two on the inside and one on the outside.
Here is an example of a similar bag that I made for purchase as a Mother’s Day gift. I customized a pink and floral fabric on the inside. Open for commissions!
blue linen pants
I made these pants for the summer. I love wearing low-rise linen pants because they are very flowy and comfortable. I added a drawstring so that the size is adjustable for a better fit.
makeup pouch
I made this bag as a gift for a friend using old quilt fabric I found. It’s a very roomy, portable bag that can be used for many things, but ideally for makeup.
AMPERSAND
I designed two outfits: a silver and a gold two-piece skirt and top set. Originally inspired by metallics, these designs were reenvisioned to represent opposing natures, with the main idea being the sun and the moon. I channeled this concept into these pieces by focusing on circle and semi-circle cutouts with beaded lines representing the sun’s rays, light, and goldness. Then, with the silver piece, I created a very straight and triangular shape to juxtapose the roundness of the other’s cutouts. I also included studs and made the fabric scrunch in the back and sides of the top to represent the moon’s craters. I was honored to have these pieces chosen by my fashion teacher as a junior to be presented in the end-of-year senior fashion show.
Plastic Crochet PURSe
For this project, I made an upcycled shoulder bag from discarded Publix plastic shopping bags. I cut the bags into strips and tied the strips together to create a ball of plastic “yarn.” Then, I used this newly formed material to crochet this bag together. I also added different colored ribbons and fluffy yarn as bow adornments on the front and back of the bag.
